The game is a virtual sandbox full of potentially endless fun and challenging gameplay with so much to discover, unlock, customize, and master. Playing with friends or strangers will add even more countless hours to your enjoyment with Hover provided you enjoy this style of parkour/grind hybrid mobility and racing action. There is easily 20+ hours of content here and even more if you want to create your own challenges for solo and multiplayer. As you might expect, the game has an equally groovy soundtrack that fits the theme of the world, both during exploration and high-intensity action, and it’s available as DLC if you enjoy it enough to listen outside the game. The HUD is slightly intrusive with all four corners streaming information some useful and some not so much. The presentation is outstanding with an art style I can genuinely call “groovy” mixing a super-stylized cel-shaded design with some truly remarkable architecture that is deceptively complex while generic enough to allow smooth framerates even when played in 4K.

It’s all explained in a very thorough and entertaining tutorial section. There is even a cool time rewind function that can play an important part of exploration and minor puzzle-solving. There is a ton of stuff to unlock and use to customize your character enabling an even larger repertoire of moves to keep the game evolving.Įven if you are in this just for the discovery elements, there is a metric ton of stuff to collect in Hover, and you’ll need to explore every last square-foot of the city to find it. The game plays wonderfully with a gamepad as you effortless pull off all sorts of cool parkour and skate-grind moves that can be used to create epic combos as well as reach new heights in a city that screams verticality. There are ten playable characters available to unlock, each with their own skills and distinct look that can all be customized.

While it is certainly possible to play, enjoy, and complete Hover alone, the game gets exponentially more fun with each new player added to the mix whether you are playing cooperatively or competitively. This is all part of the big focus on community. Hover City is huge and designed in such a way to not only engage player experimentation and discovery, but also use the built-in tools to create your own custom events and challenges. If you can manage to reach the Orbital Station and reestablish communication with the Galactic Union you can hopefully end this oppression. Your non-violent protests include sabotaging the government, defacing their propaganda, and helping out the joyless population of Hover City to give everyone a positive aura. Mixing a unique style of grinding that’s not quite skating and some cool parkour mobility, Hover takes the genre to new heights with its sandbox style presentation that allows gamers to move seamlessly from single player to multiplayer where you can work together as part of the Rebellion and rise up against the anti-leisure government or just engage in casual racing events or simply explore the city to uncover its secrets and leave your mark with a cool tagging system.Īs the leader of the rebels you’ll be in charge of going up against “The Great Admin” who have cut all communication from the Galactic Union and outlawed all forms of entertainment. Hover: Revolt of Gamers is the next evolution of open-world cel-shaded skating games, born from the gameplay and visual style that made Jet Set/Grind Radio the classic it is today.
